40-Year-Old Virgin

Just released this weekend, I first saw a preview at the showing of "Mr. and Mrs. Smith." From that moment on, I wanted to see it. Simply based on the title, one can expect a raunch-fest along the lines of "American Pie." Like that movie series, this movie followed a guy's struggles with relationships and carried a meaningful message.

Steve Carell plays Andy, an electronics store stock boy [man?] who is 40-years-old and still a virgin. Found out by his coworkers during a poker game, these three "experienced" men help Andy lose his virginity. Meanwhile, Andy finds a woman working nearby who holds some interest in him. He builds an emotional (non-sexual) relationship with her while the other guys realize that they have their own relationship problems. Of course, in the end, everybody is happy, and Andy and Trish experience that physical connection on their wedding night. Consistent with the end of "Something About Mary," Andy starts singing "Aquarius" (instead of "Build Me Up Buttercup") and the characters complete a music video as the credits begin to roll.

Yes, I did give out the ending of the movie, but you would have seen it coming anyway. It's the conversations getting there that are important. For example when Andy's friends compete in a game of "You know why you're gay..." or the various points in the film when Andy admits he's a virgin.
